Walk any route you choose. Biking also permissible. No cars or car rides.

Goals and Objectives:
  1. To familiarize students with local resources for traditional hunting and fishing activities
  2. To familiarize students with State Hunting and Fishing Regulations and laws
  3. To introduce students to ethical and ecological considerations related to tools and equipment used for traditional fishing and hunting.

Strategies:

  • Students will each locate and retrieve their personal copy of the 2009 book of Idaho State General Rules and Regulations for Fishing
  • Students will each locate and retrieve their personal copy of the 2009 pamphlet of Idaho State General Rules and Regulations for Wolf Hunting
  • Students will meet the owner of the store who has volunteered to answer questions
  • Students will come prepared with questions about traditional methods of fishing or hunting.
  • Students will write reports and submit examinations to the instructor for evaluation.


Hook: A scavenger hunt and best fly contest

Procedures/ Activities:
  • Each student will prepare questions related to traditional fishing and archery hunting in advance of the field trip.
  • Each student will locate online instructions for tying a wooly bugger or an emerger and take the instructions with them to the store.
  • Once inside the store, each student will locate and retrieve a copy of the 2009 Idaho State General Regulations for Fishing and the 2009 Wolf Hunting Seasons and Rules.
  • Each student will familiarize herself or himself with the location of items in the store.
  • Each student will tie one black wooly bugger fly (or emerger) using free materials located inside the store and submit the fly to the owner of the store for judging.
  • Each student will write a summary of this field trip experience and post text and photos on his or her individual blog.
  • Each student will examine closely a few objects in the store related to fly fishing or bow hunting and research the origins of the materials and the methods used for their manufacture and use and then submit a written report to the instructor before the deadline. Students will post the same report on a blog.

Assessments:

  • In class examination over the 2009 rules and regulations for fishing and wolf hunting.
  • Best Fly Contest judged by Jim Hepworth, Mark Lamb, and LeRoy Hyatt.
  • Instructor graded reports using criteria listed on grade chart.

Deadlines: Students will have one week to take the field trip, write reports, post to blogs, and prepare for examinations (9:00 a.m. Friday 25 September 2009). Students have two weeks to complete research and write reports (9:00 a.m. Friday 2October 2009).
