- Use a conventional aluminum beer can, a wine cork (or clear plastic bobber), and enough used, recycled, or new line to create a primitive tool capable of catching a fish with a fly or lure.
- Feel free to substitute any materials that will work for you. For example, if you prefer to use a simple spool in place of the beer can, please do.
- Practice using your creation at home. In other words, prepare yourself to use the tool. If you like, practice on water.
- Bring your completed creation to our next class meeting on Friday in the MLH. Be on time.
Extra Credit Assignment (Five Points)
- Buy a fishing license for the appropriate state in which you intend to fish. (A one day license will do.)
- Using only a fly or a lure you have created and your fishing tool, do your best to catch a fish of any species.
- If possible, clean and eat the fish. If not, carefully release the fish. If you are unable to catch a fish, you may nevertheless record your experience and continue with the assignment.
- Photograph the process and write about it. Post your edited photos and your best writing on your personal blog.
- In writing about the experience, be sure to identify the most important ethical and ecological considerations inherent in the process.
- Likewise, identify the species of fish, measure its size and weight, and report some facts about its species history. For example, is the species native or exotic?
- If you fail to catch a fish, do your best critical thinking to discover why you failed.
