Required Writing Assignment: Write a Research Proposal

Prepare a proposal that outlines your project. Format your prospectus in MLA style for a five to seven page research paper. Treat the proposal itself as a research paper and be sure to include an annotated bibliography along with all the following elements.

  • Identification of a topic or topic area. Explain your topic area and provide reasons for selecting this subject. (Why do you care? Why should we care?)
  • A hypothesis, research question, or thesis. State your hypothesis or thesis question clearly. Discuss this controling idea in some detail and defend its significance, relevance, or appropriateness. (Make sure you are in control of the topic, that you clearly define it, and that the topic is narrow enough to thoroughly examine in 1250-1750 words.)
  • Background information and literature review. Identify the most important books, articles, and other materials you expect to read to gain background information on your subject and survey the major work already done in your research area. (Quote directly from these sources in your proposal.)
  • A review of research resources. Identify the types of materials you'll need for your project and determine their availability: books, articles, newspapers, documents, manuscriipts, recordings, videos, artworks, data basises, online sources, and so on. List these items and briefly comment on them in an anotated biliography.
    • Identify at least one person you will interview and set up the interview. (At least one interview is required. Be sure to identify the subject of your interview and to state your subject's credentials.)
  • A description of your research methodology. Outline the procedures you will follow in your research, and justify your choice of methodology.
  • A schedule or timeline. For more information about scheduling a project, see the forthcoming calendar to be posted on this blog. Include a plan (calendar) for carrying out your project with your proposal.
